Internet Speed Requirements for Xbox 360, Xbox One or Xbox Live
What is Xbox Live?
Xbox Live is the online gaming service for your Xbox One or 360. With Xbox Live you can see demos of the latest Microsoft Kinect and controller games. You can also rent or buy HD movies, download full Xbox games or download updates to your favourite games like Fable II, Forza Motorsport 2, Halo 3: ODST, Call of Duty : world at war, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Grand Theft Auto IV, Gears of War 2.
Minimum Internet Speed
The minimum internet speed required for playing with XBox One or Xbox 360 is at least 1mbps download speed and 200 kbps upload speed for Xbox Live. Due notice that this is the very minimum speed required. You can check out your current internet speed with our Internet Speedometer.
Maybey even more important than your internet speed is the latency or lag.

Things to Try
When you’re playing with Xbox Live it’s possible that you experience things like a slow game play, poor speed performance or “lag” between actions. There are some steps you can try to solve these kinds of issues specifically for the Xbox:
- Reduce number of players
- Play at a different time of day
- Contact your ISP
If you’re playing wireless, know that a weak wireless signal in your house can cause poor Xbox live performance. With the Xbox you can check your wireless signal strength. How can you check your wireless strength? Follow these three steps on your Xbox :
- On your console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
- Select Network Settings.
- Select Test Xbox Live Connection.
After you’ve done this test the results will be displayed. Now if your wireless signal strength is only one or two bars, you can try improving your wireless signal strength. There are several ways to improve signal strength :
- Move your router or gateway.
Put your router or gateway off the floor and not near any walls and metal objects. These objects are the possible cause of loosing signal strength.
- Minimize obstructions
If possible, make sure that there is a straight line path between your Xbox 360 console and your wireless router or gateway.
- Shorten the distance
Try to shorten the distance between your Xbox console and your wireless router or gateway. In the ideal world your network hardware should be near the center of your home.
- Change the position of the antenna
You can adjust the postion of the antenna on your Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter.
- Turn off wireless devices
You can turn off other wireless devices such as 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) cordless telephones. If you have a dual mode router or gateway, try switching to 802.11a or “A,” because it’s less affected by interference.
- Try changing your wireless channel.
Wireless routers and gateways can broadcast on different channels and one channel might be clearer than another. This is due to the fact that other people in your area may be broadcasting on the same channel. To change the channel do this read your hardware documentation for help changing wireless channels.
- Add a wireless repeater
With a wireless repeater you can extend your wireless network range. You can boost your signal strength by placing a wireless repeater halfway between your network hardware and your Xbox console.
- Switch to a cable
Connect your console to your router or gateway using a network cable. As always, a wired connection is the fastest and most reliable intenet connection. After switching to a wired network cable, make sure you test your connection speed on the Xbox again (see steps above).
- Satellite connections
If you use a satellite dish for your broadband connection, you might experience slow performance when you try to join or play a game. This happens because of the way that satellite connections handle latency.
When you play games or videos on Xbox LIVE, make sure that other computers in your home are not downloading or transferring large amounts of files. When someone in your house browses the Internet, they use bandwidth and that might be slowing your Xbox 360 console. If your bandwidth is limited or fluctuates dramatically, it can affect the performance of Xbox Live.
You can try to simplify your setup. A way to do this is to temporarily disconnect everything from your router or gateway, except the connection from your Xbox console to your router or gateway and the connection to your modem. After this, test your Xbox Live connection.
3. Reduce the number players
It’s possible that your internet connection speed may not support a large number of players. Try reducing the number of players that can join your Xbox Live game. For example, reduce the number of players who can join your game from 16 to 8. If you notice an improvement, contact your ISP to see if you can upgrade your broadband connection speed.
4. Play at a different time of day
Xbox Live game performance can fluctuate with the speed of your internet connection. Residential internet networks are often busiest in the evenings when people are at home. You may get the best internet connection speed during the day.
5. Contact your ISP
Contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to see if there are performance problems in your area. Your ISP may have a service status page on their website that you can visit.
Leave a comment if you know the exact internet speed required for a specific Xbox One or Xbox 360 game, or if you have solved gaming performance for Xbox Live. In this way you will help others make the right choice. Thanks!
