Skype can be used for a lot of different features such as, Video Calls, call phones, mobile and instant messaging. One of the most popular features is the Skype Video Calls option. But what is it that you exactly require for Skype?

Skype Calling

For Skype Calling, aka voice calling, there is a minimum internet speed required with at least 30 kbps upload speed and 30 kbps download speed. The recommended bandwidth by Skype is at least 100 kbps upload speed and 100 kpbs download speed. So although the minimum requirements are possible with a dial-up internet connection, you cannot use any other feature with that kind of internet connection. For best quality a decent internet broadband connection is advisable. Remember that GPRS is not supported for voice calls.

Video Calling

But the requirements for video calling are higher than the requirements for Skype Calling. This is due to the fact that more data is sent over your internet connection.

How to Check Skype Internet Speed?

To find out if your internet connection is fast enough to make a Skype call:

  1. In the Contacts list, select the contact you wish to call.
  2. In the call window, click the Check settings button.
  3. In the Connection tab, click Test Now.
  4. Skype will test the internet connection between you and your contact and display the results.

Minimum System requirements for Skype

  • PC running Windows® XP, Vista or 7, both 32- and 64-bit operating systems.
  • Internet connection – broadband is best.
  • Speakers and microphone – built-in or separate.
  • For group video calling everyone on the call needs Skype 5.0 for Windows or Mac or higher plus webcams, and at least one person needs a group video calling subscription.  For best quality it is recommended you use a computer with a Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz processor. As a minimum you’ll need a computer with a 1 GHz processor.

Also remember that you cannot place emergency calls with Skype. Skype is not a replacement for your telephone and can’t be used for emergency calling.

Solve Issues with Skype Internet Speed

If you experience issues with the speed of your connection, you could try one of the following solutions:

  • Closing other applications that use the internet, especially those playing music or video.
  • Cancelling any file transfers in progress.
  • Make sure you’re the only one using your internet connection and no other devices are using excessive bandwidth.
  • Use a wired internet connection

Maybey even more important than your speed is the latency or lag.
